Meet The Candidates
Mayor

Following a professional career as a Naval Officer, American Airlines Executive, and consultant with Price Waterhouse Coopers, my wife, Amy, and I returned to the area where we grew up making New Smyrna Beach our home. I feel strongly that out-of-scale, unprecedented development makes this an especially urgent time for all citizens to unite in solving our infrastructure challenges and securing a sustainable future.
At an early age, I learned both the importance of service to others and the importance of collaborative effort in successfully addressing critical challenges. Whether this came in the form of becoming an Eagle Scout as a boy, an appointment to the Naval Academy as a young man, a Captain’s rank in the U.S. Navy, or leadership positions in private life, service has defined me. With time to devote to this unique call to service, I have the leadership experience and skill to serve as Mayor and would be honored to do so.

I
am Michael Kolody, 75, current New Smyrna Beach commissioner, Zone 1. I am the retired owner of an engineering, planning and surveying business located out of state. I have professional licenses as a Planner, Engineer and Surveyor which serve well when dealing with the complex issues facing city commissioners. I have not accomplished all the goals I had undertaken in my first term and desire a second term to continue the progress made to date. I have instituted numerous changes to how the city controls development by protecting wetlands to preserve the environment, groundwater recharge and open waters by increasing wetland buffers.
We need to preserve the quality of life in town, particularly in the older developed neighborhoods through revisions to our land development codes. The Planned Unit Development (PUD) regulations are woefully inadequate. When the city commission and planning & zoning board were top heavy with real estate centric members the approvals granted have exacerbated the problems we have now.

Our community deserves a strong, reliable leader. One that listens, respects, and understands the citizens and our community. I have a BA in Business Administration and an MBA and I studied Accounting at Purdue University. I have two beautiful grown daughters. I am involved in my church and have been very active in our community, recently completing a 4-year voluntary term as Vice-Chair on the NSB Economic Development Advisory Board. I support our local business owners and will work to protect Flagler and Canal Streets’ charm.
One of the biggest challenges our city currently faces is the management of our city budget. For over 25 years, I was responsible for managing budgets, processes and forecasts for Fortune 500 corporations like Target and Kroger. I also worked with small businesses to help them become financially sound. Just as growth must be managed, our city budget MUST BE MANAGED. Given the opportunity, I will be able to help our beautiful city with these challenges. When elected as City Commissioner of Zone 1, I will retire from Real Estate and dedicate all of my time to the Commission.

You already know me. You met me along the way.
I discovered New Smyrna Beach in 2009, promptly and joyfully bought a house, adopted the city as my permanent home and became active in our community. From building a house with Habitat for Humanity to volunteering in our Arts functions to attending most city meetings, I have been involved in NSB for a decade monitoring city operations and service on several NSB Advisory Boards plus 30+ years of high-value, complex business experience.
I am highly qualified to be a NSB City Commissioner. Knowing the city border-to-border and issues unique to each neighborhood, I am prepared to support all NSB residents and locally-owned businesses.

I am convinced that I am the best choice for Zone 2 Commissioner for the following reasons. First and foremost, I truly believe that I am called to serve in this capacity. That calling is undeniable and in and of itself makes me compelled to not only fill this position but to do so with excellence. Second, my business acumen balanced with my desire to see the integrity of NSB maintained, gives me a perspective on our future that is grounded in common sense. Third, I so believe in this town that my wife and I are investing our future here. We have chosen to lay down our roots in NSB and in doing so, we are committed to a future that serves all NSB’ers in the best way possible. Lastly, a vote for David McKenna, is a vote for the people. I am the type of individual that gets involved
and immersed in what I do. I will be in the community in as many ways as I can to hear what my constituents say and to best represent them at the Commission.
